News on prices: Expected reduction and no advance payment
VANA expects to be able to present lower base prices for the handling of your packaging waste at the beginning of September. At the same time, CEO of VANA, Marianne Roed Jakobsen, emphasises that members do not have to pay advance payment to VANA, as VANA provides a guarantee on behalf of its approximately 2700 members.
There has been significant media interest regarding the producer responsibility for packaging over the summer. The debate gained momentum when VANA, as the first producer responsibility organisation (PRO) published our base prices at the end of June.
Political pressure for lower municipal fees
The founders of VANA (Danish Industry, Danish Chamber of Commerce, Danish Agriculture & Food Council, and Dagsam) have applied political pressure to set a cap on municipal fees and to eliminate the fees completely in the last quarter of the year. The background is that citizens have already paid for waste collection in the last three months of the year. We are awaiting a political clarification and will inform as soon as there is news.
Wake-up call for businesses
The announcement of the base prices was a necessary wake-up call regarding the large expenses businesses face when the producer responsibility comes into force. Municipal fees account for an average of about 75% of VANA's prices – for the glass fraction, as much as 81%.
Expected adjustment in September
Since the publication, several municipalities have corrected errors in their fee calculations, which overall points to lower municipal fees in VANA's coverage area. At the same time, The Danish Environmental Protection Agency is working on re-calculating COWI's key figures, following criticism of the original calculations. New figures are expected to be published around September 1st, and VANA anticipates being able to present lower base prices in early September based on that.
No advance payment for members of VANA
While we await the political clarification, we are pleased to share that VANA will not require advance payment from our members:
As a producer responsibility organisation (PRO), we provide a guarantee on behalf of our approximately 2,700 members. This means that none of our members should have money at stake before the first invoice is issued for the ongoing reporting of packaging quantities.
