VANA and GS1 Denmark enter into agreement to facilitate handling of producer responsibility

VANA – Dansk Emballageansvar and GS1 Denmark, which is behind the barcodes in Denmark and globally, are joining forces to develop an IT platform to manage the extended producer responsibility for packaging, which will come into force in 2025. VANA's members will thus be able to report packaging data in a known system.

Take something complicated and make it simple. This is the reasoning behind an agreement that VANA – Dansk Emballageansvar has just entered into with GS1 Denmark, which is behind all barcodes in Denmark and globally.

Cut to the core, VANA and GS1 Denmark have agreed to develop an IT platform for recording packaging data. The platform will be linked to GS1's already widespread system for exchanging product data, and the goal is that packaging data can be reported as automatically and simply as possible to the Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) VANA.

Thus, the up to 42,000 Danish production and trading companies, which in less than a year will be registering their packaging quantities, can manage a large part of the work in a system and workflow they already know and use.

"For us, it is crucial that we as a Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) can help companies live up to the producer responsibility as simply as possible. We need to adapt to the business community – not the other way around. Our members must be able to concentrate on the core business and leave the bureaucracy to us".

Marianne Roed Jakobsen
Adm. direktør, VANA

Among other things, the platform will form the basis for VANA may charge correct payment for producer responsibility, and it must be able to accommodate everyone covered by the producer responsibility – small as well as large companies. Therefore, it is designed so that both members of GS1 Denmark and companies that are not members can use it smoothly.

The barcode and the underlying system are already deeply integrated into Danish trade and ensure that product data – stock status, origin, ecolabels, etc. – flows efficiently. Therefore, it is both natural and a great advantage for the business community that packaging data for producer responsibility is included in the same system. "

GS1 is global and is present in 116 countries. Thus, there are international perspectives in the platform, which is also being prepared for the EU-specific digital product passport of the future.
