VANA and Verdis will create a Danish solution to the long-standing waste problem

VANA and Verdi are now entering into a collaboration for the establishment of a new Danish facility for the recycling of food and beverage cartons - a fraction that has been challenged for several years by insufficient treatment capacity, transportation, authority processes, and incineration.

News 05 June 2026

For several years, Denmark has had a weakness in its waste system: Citizens and businesses sort packaging for recycling, but for food and beverage cartons (FBC), the value chain has not been strong enough to ensure a stable path from sorting to new resources.

VANA and Verdis aim to change this.

VANA and Verdis are now entering into a collaboration to establish a Danish recycling facility for used food and beverage cartons. The goal is to create a more local, robust, and documentable solution that can enhance actual recycling and reduce dependence on treatment abroad.

The collaboration is also an important boost for producer responsibility. Food and beverage cartons are a central and very visible packaging fraction, where a robust Danish treatment solution has been lacking until now. Food and beverage cartons have therefore been sent for recycling in our neighboring countries, but insufficient treatment capacity means that not all cartons (neither from Denmark nor abroad) have been able to be recycled.

The FBC fraction shows that producer responsibility only works if the entire value chain is interconnected. Citizens and businesses sort, municipalities collect, and producers take responsibility, and now we must help ensure that the materials also have a real path forward. Therefore, we are pleased to take this step together with VANA.

For Verdis, the collaboration is an important step in the work of developing Danish treatment capacity for waste fractions that have historically been difficult to recycle.

We have previously worked on the possibility of a Danish FBC facility, but at that time we lacked the necessary quantity basis. With VANA as a partner, we get a much stronger foundation to realise a solution that can hold together both technically, environmentally, and economically.

The ambition is to develop one of the leading treatment facilities in the Nordic region for food and beverage cartons. The new facility is expected to be located in Avedøre Holme, where Verdis is already in the process of establishing a new recycling plant for used diapers. This way, the area can become a central platform for Verdis' work with the waste fractions that have so far been among the most challenging to recycle.

This is about making producer responsibility, waste sorting, and circular economy work in practice. When materials are sorted for recycling, we also need to build the recycling facilities that can further process them as resources.

VANA and Verdis are now continuing to work on the concrete realisation, including quantities, technology, economy, authority relations, location, and schedule.
